Cochrane continues to prepare for the worst, with a lot being learned in the years since floodwaters swept across southern Alberta in 2013.
Truper McBride was the mayor of Cochrane during the southern Alberta floods of 2013.Over the next couple of days, town staff were out inspecting municipal infrastructure and natural hills and slopes for damage, according to McBride.
“Luckily there wasn’t anything, there was no damage to residential houses, no loss of life or injury,” he said. “Cochrane’s topography, the location in the region, kept us out of the brunt of it.The 2013 flood resulted in an estimated $1 million in repairs for the town, mostly for repairing banks and pathways.
“Compared to some other communities in the Bow and Elbow River watersheds, Cochrane fared quite well, there was some overland flooding, but we didn’t have any catastrophic flood damage like they did in other communities,” he said.“Some communities like High River, Calgary, that did experience that, they share some of their knowledge in terms of how they’ve dealt with the results of 2013 flooding,” he said.
