The provincial government of Bohol launches a groundbreaking 12-kilometer farm-to-market road project, funded by a World Bank loan, connecting Desamparados, Calape to Tabuan, Antequera. The project aims to improve agricultural accessibility, boost productivity, and stimulate economic growth in the province.
The provincial government of Bohol held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, January 23, for a 12-kilometer farm-to-market road connecting two towns in the province. This project, deemed the largest in the history of the Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP), links Desamparados, Calape to Tabuan, Antequera.
Funded by a World Bank loan channeled to the national government, with Bohol as the recipient, the P608-million project is a testament to the commitment to enhancing agricultural production and driving economic growth. Bohol Governor Aris Aumentado emphasized the significance of the project, underscoring the need to safeguard and nurture it for the betterment of agricultural endeavors. He assured that the provincial government is fully invested in its success, evidenced by its P60-million contribution to the initiative. Governor Aumentado further stated that the province, through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, stands ready to strengthen collaborations with the PRDP, the Department of Agriculture (DA), and the World Bank for any future developments. The rehabilitation and upgrading of the Desamparados–Tabuan Farm-to-Market Road aim to significantly improve accessibility, bolster agricultural productivity, and stimulate economic development within the province. The project encompasses the construction of four major bridges – Desamparados, Labuon, Binogawan, and Cabayugan – strategically positioned to facilitate smoother transportation routes. The road will traverse seven barangays in Calape and Antequera, covering a sprawling 4,060-hectare area that encompasses agricultural lands, residential zones, and mangrove forests. This vast scope of influence is projected to benefit 3,842 households, including 2,817 farming families and 410 fishing households.Upon completion, this transformative project is anticipated to reduce the average commute time from the current 24.29 minutes to a mere 10.34 minutes, significantly enhancing connectivity. It is also estimated to increase traffic volume from 150 vehicles in the initial year to 230 vehicles by the 20th year, reflecting a surge in economic activity. Furthermore, the project aims to cultivate 525 hectares of currently idle land over the next 20 years, effectively transforming underutilized areas into vibrant agricultural zones. These concerted efforts are expected to contribute to enhanced food security and promote sustainable economic development in the region. The project prioritizes environmental protection, with the road designed to minimize ecological disruption while traversing a 7.36-hectare mangrove area. A designated 429.412-hectare residential zone will accommodate the growing population and provide space for the development of thriving, sustainable communities
