The carriage carrying the Black Nazarene during the annual Traslacion procession has been redesigned to enhance durability and discourage devotees from climbing on it.
The design of the carriage, or andas, that carries the revered Black Nazarene during the annual Traslacion has undergone significant modifications in preparation for the 2025 traditional religious procession . Quiapo Church's technical adviser for the Jesus Nazareno Fiesta 2025 Alex Irasga said these changes aim to enhance the durability of the structure and discourage devotees from climbing onto it during the event, which has been a growing concern in recent years.
Irasga said that the centuries-old statue of the suffering Jesus, known as the Nazareno, will be housed in a tempered glass enclosure with a roof and lights to protect it during the procession. For the first time this year, a glass panel has been installed on top of the enclosure to allow natural light to penetrate and provide those positioned higher up with a clearer view of the image. An exhaust fan and ventilation system has also been incorporated to address the moisture issues that affected the enclosure during last year's procession. Another significant change is the addition of measures to prevent people from climbing onto the front of the andas, a behavior that occurred during the previous year's event when devotees stepped on the lights and flowers. With the new design, there is nothing for the public to step on, ensuring a safer and more respectful environment for the revered statue. Irasga said these efforts aim to ensure that more people can see the Black Nazarene during the procession, rather than focusing on the devotees themselves
