The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) should look into allegations that kidnap-for-ransom victims were involved in corruption activities.
“The BIR should look into that. If the PNP has an internal cleansing, other agencies should also do the same if there are allegations of corruption,” said Gen. Oscar Albayalde, chief of the Philippine National Police .
Last week, the National Capital Region Police Office raided five safehouses of a kidnap group tagged in the kidnapping of BIR officers. Last month, authorities arrested two BIR employees for allegedly extorting P160 million from a telecom company to settle their tax deficiencies. Such type of extortion is reportedly the modus of erring BIR officers.“There are indications that the kidnappers were being tipped because the victims were identified. I am not saying that it is true but it is not far that there could be tipsters,” said Albayalde.
