SAN JOSE, Batangas: Ricardo Batcho of Caloocan City defeated Apollo Agapay of Cabuyao City in the seventh round to capture the non-master crown while Jerald Mariano, Herson Bangay and Jerrick Roose Albert ruled their respective age-group divisions in the 1st Mayor Valentino 'Ben' Patron FIDE Rated Rapid Chess Championship at the FPJ Arena in San Jose, Batangas on Sunday, October 8, 2023.
Batcho, ahead by a full point after six rounds, outwitted Agapay with the black pieces to emerge as solo champion in the non-master category with a perfect 7.0 points.Batcho went home with a P15,000 top purse courtesy of Mayor Valentino 'Ben' R. Patron in the tournament organized by Golden Mind Chess Club President Alexandro 'Allan' Osena.
Meanwhile, Mariano, Bangay and Albert topped the 15-below, 12-below and 9-below age group divisions, respectively.Earlier, Mayor Valentino 'Ben' R. Patron was joined by 13-time Philippine Open champion Grandmaster Rogelio 'Joey' Antonio Jr., National Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. and Henrick Marello Bolaños in performing the ceremonial moves that flagged off the one-day rapid chess event.
