Baguio City has successfully reduced its daily garbage volume by 50 tons thanks to increased resident participation in proper waste management practices. The city government emphasizes the importance of a circular economy, transforming waste into valuable resources and creating economic opportunities for its residents.

Baguio City has witnessed a significant reduction in its daily garbage volume, thanks to increased resident participation in proper waste management practices. Mayor Benjamin Magalong announced that the city's daily residual waste production has dropped from 250 tons in 2023 to 188 tons in 2024, representing an average reduction of 50 tons per day.

This decrease translates to substantial savings in hauling and tipping costs associated with transporting and processing waste to the engineered sanitary landfill in Urdaneta, Pangasinan. Magalong attributed the reduction to several factors, including proactive waste management initiatives, increased household-level segregation, and the operation of a black soldier fly (BSF) facility since last year. This facility effectively processes food waste generated at the city market and the central business district. Additionally, several barangays have implemented their own segregation schemes, resulting in a higher recovery rate of recyclables. The city government is actively promoting a circular economy model, where waste is viewed as a resource rather than simply garbage. Initiatives such as repurposing coco husks into pots and selling them at an orchidarium demonstrate the city's commitment to transforming waste into valuable materials, creating economic opportunities for residents. Magalong emphasized the city's vision of becoming a livable, inclusive, and creative city by 2043, despite the challenges posed by urban decay and climate change. The progress made in waste management is a crucial step towards achieving this sustainable and resilient future
