The Baguio City Health Service Office is taking proactive measures to prevent the spread of mpox during the upcoming Panagbenga Festival, collaborating with various government agencies and establishments to ensure public safety.

The Baguio City Health Service Office is actively collaborating with various government agencies and establishments to mitigate the spread of mpox during the Panagbenga festivities. These partners include the City Tourism Council, the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Baguio, accommodation providers, food businesses, spas, gyms, salons, laundry shops, and transport hubs.

The city health service office emphasized that organizers of the Panagbenga Festival have assured the public that the festivities will proceed as scheduled. They have implemented heightened coordination between health authorities and event organizers to prioritize the safety of all attendees.During a press conference, Donnabel Panes, the city health service medical officer, stated that specific public health advisories were disseminated to each establishment to guide them in preventing the spread of mpox. The 2025 Panagbenga Festival is scheduled from February 1st to March 2nd. Mpox, a zoonotic disease (transmissible from animals to humans), spreads through close physical contact and typically presents with flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions. While generally mild, it can be fatal. The Department of Health (DOH) reports that human-to-human transmission of mpox is possible through direct contact with skin or mucosal lesions, such as talking, breathing, kissing, touching, hugging, or sexual intercourse, as well as through respiratory secretions. Baguio City's health service office has strengthened its mpox monitoring following the confirmation of two additional cases, bringing the total number of infectious cases to four. The infections in these new cases are attributed to the less severe Clade II mpox virus type. Both patients are currently under home isolation until February 16th and 14th, respectively, while their close contacts, who are asymptomatic, have been advised to undergo routine health monitoring for 21 days. The city health service office urges the public to practice proper hygiene, avoid close skin-to-skin contact, wear protective clothing in crowded areas, seek medical attention, and remain home if mpox symptoms develop. Baguio recorded its first mpox case on January 19th, followed by another case on January 25th.
