INTERNATIONAL Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad of the Philippines scored 6.0 points in nine rounds and placed 6th overall in the Asian Seniors Championships which took place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from Aug. 9 to 19, 2024.

Bagamasbad , 67, competed in the 65 years old and above category. The Asian Chess Championships are held annually. The other category is for players 50 to 64 years old.It is not the first time Bagamasbad has competed in the Asian Seniors .He actually earned an outright International Master title when he topped the same tournament in 2022 in Auckland, New Zealand. He repeated as champion when the event was held in Tagaytay City last year. This time he fell short of making it three in a row.

'Efren's triumph is proof of the importance of pursuing one's passions because there can be no limits if we put our minds to it,' FlorCruz said. While Bagamasbad started playing chess as early as age 8, his father wanted him to focus on his studies. Eventually, he earned a Chemical Engineering degree in 1979.'Chess was a hobby of mine during that time,' he said.
