The NSW deputy Labor leader and shadow education minister has been tripped up on a question from a Year 7 NAPLAN numeracy question that the Education Minister managed to answer successfully.

The New South Wales shadow education minister has joked"English was my strong point" after incorrectly answering a question from a Year 7 NAPLAN numeracy test.

Prue Car, who is also the deputy Labor leader in the state, was faced with the question as she debated Education Minister Sarah Mitchell on Sydney's 2GB radio on Wednesday. Host Ben Fordham asked Ms Car and Ms Mitchell to answer the non-calculator question that was posed to students in 2016 at the end of the debate.The question the pair were asked was:"Pears cost $4 per kilogram. Ben buys 4.15 kilograms of pears. How much does Ben pay for the pears?".
