Many of us are juggling too many things at once, making it challenging to maintain a healthy diet. It is also easy to resort to fast food or processed meals out of convenience since we have all our food apps available at our beck and call, but this often compromises nutrition and overall health.

Many of us are juggling too many things at once, making it challenging to maintain a healthy diet. It is also easy to resort to fast food or processed meals out of convenience since we have all our food apps available at our beck and call, but this often compromises nutrition and overall health.

The gains we get in saving time affect our health in the long run, negating the gains seemingly had in the first place.Enter batch cooking.Batch cooking offers a practical solution — it allows you to prepare meals in advance, ensuring that you have healthy, home-cooked food ready to go throughout the week.By batch cooking, you have complete control over the ingredients, portion sizes, and flavors, making it easier to stick to a balanced diet.Instead of scrambling for last-minute meal options, you can simply reheat a nutritious dish, saving time and effort while still eating well. The key to successful batch cooking is choosing dishes that store well and maintain their taste and texture over several days.Soups and stews, such as lentil soup, beef stew, or chicken tinola, are excellent options as their flavors develop even further over time.Curries and braised dishes like chicken adobo or beef mechado are also great choices since they become more flavorful the longer they sit.Roasted vegetables and proteins, such as roasted chicken, grilled fish, or stir-fried tofu, can be prepared in bulk and used in multiple ways throughout the week.Whole grains and legumes, including brown rice, quinoa, and mung beans, serve as versatile bases for various meals.Marinated meats, like grilled pork chops or chicken inasal, can be prepped in advance, making it easy to cook fresh, flavorful meals quickly. One of the best Filipino dishes for batch cooking is Adobo. This vinegar-based dish not only lasts well in the fridge but also tastes even better as the flavors meld over time.To make it, marinate chicken thighs or drumsticks in a mixture of soy sauce, vinegar, minced garlic, black peppercorns, and bay leaves for at least 30 minutes, though overnight marination enhances the flavor.Heat oil in a pan, sear the chicken until browned, then pour in the marinade along with water. Let it simmer for about 30 to 40 minutes until the chicken is tender and the sauce thickens. Adjust seasoning with salt or sugar if needed. This dish pairs well with rice and vegetables and can be repurposed into different meals throughout the week. At home, we typically pair pork adobo with homemade pickled vegetables.Eating the same dish repeatedly can feel monotonous, but a little creativity can make batch-cooked meals exciting.Changing up the sides, such as pairing adobo with garlic fried rice one day and quinoa or mashed sweet potatoes another, adds variety.Leftover chicken adobo can be shredded and used as a protein topping for salads with cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and a vinegar-based dressing. Adding pickles or relish, like atchara or pickled cucumbers, provides a refreshing contrast to the savory flavors. For an entirely different meal, shredded adobo can be stuffed into a whole wheat wrap with lettuce and tomatoes or mixed into pancit noodles or ramen for a flavorful twist. It can also be transformed into a hearty breakfast by frying the meat until crispy and serving it with a fried egg and rice for a classic 'silog' meal.Easy planning ahead and using creative serving ideas, you can enjoy a variety of meals without feeling like you're eating the same thing every day.***The author may be reached at kaycalpolugtu@gmail.com or follow her at Instagram @kaycalpolugtu and @aplateofbahaykubo.
