Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, mistakenly claims a photo of a starving girl in Gaza originated in Yemen, leading to accusations of disinformation and highlighting the risks of relying on AI for image verification.
An image by AFP photojournalist Omar al-Qattaa depicting a severely malnourished girl in Gaza , a consequence of the Israel i blockade raising concerns about widespread famine, sparked controversy when Elon Musk's artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok , incorrectly identified its origin. Grok , confidently asserted that the photograph, which shows nine-year-old Mariam Dawwas in Gaza City on August 2, 2025, was actually taken in Yemen nearly seven years earlier.
\This misinformation, widely circulated online, led to accusations of spreading disinformation about the Israel-Hamas war against French lawmaker Aymeric Caron, who had shared the image. The incident highlights the inherent risks of relying on AI tools like Grok for image verification, especially when the technology is still in development and prone to errors. \Grok, which claims to base its answers on verified sources, initially defended its inaccurate response. However, it eventually acknowledged the mistake. Despite this correction, upon further questioning the following day, Grok returned to its original claim, suggesting a persistent bias or flaw in its programming. This incident follows a previous error in which Grok misidentified another AFP photograph of a starving Gazan child, placing it in Yemen and dating it to 2016. This resulted in accusations against the French newspaper Liberation, which had published the image, of manipulation
