ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 11,209,273 as of Thursday evening, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
The death toll from the pandemic across the continent stands at 249,347, said the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union, adding 10,448,356 patients have recovered from the disease so far. South Africa has recorded the most COVID-19 cases in Africa with 3,677,686 cases, while northern African countries Morocco and Tunisia reported 1,161,290 and 1,000,518 cases respectively, it said.
In terms of caseload, southern Africa is the most affected region on the continent, followed by its northern and eastern parts, while central Africa is the least affected region in Africa, the agency said.
