MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte — This city is expected to burst into festivity on August 14, 2024 as Manila Archbishop Jose Advincula Jr. leads the inauguration and declaration of the Our Lady of the Assumption Church of the Diocese of Maasin as a National Shrine.

The event will happen on the eve of the feast of Maasin.Rev. Msgr. Bernardo Pantin, secretary general of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines , told The Manila Times that Advincula will be joined by around 20 bishops in the Pontifical Concelebrated Mass and inauguration of the National Shrine .Pantin said the Maasin Church will be the First National Shrine in Eastern Visayas and its inauguration is seen to strengthen the devotion of the faithful to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Maasin Cathedral Church became a parish under Jesuit missionaries in 1771. In 1843, when the Franciscans took over, the parish was dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption.In 1968, the parish declared Our Lady of the Assumption as its patroness.On Aug. 15, 2018, the image received Episcopal coronation in a rite led by then archbishop of Manila, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle.Nearly four years later, on Aug.
