Age differences in kindergarten classes span up to 19 months in NSW because children can start as old as six or as young as four-and-a-half.
Thousands more public school students are starting school later compared with a decade ago, as more parents in NSW wait until the year their child turns six before entering kindergarten.
However, Opposition education spokeswoman Sarah Mitchell said teachers had told her of the challenges the discrepancy presented in the classroom and said now was the appropriate time to review the school starting age. Co-author of that research Dr Sally Larsen said the cut-off date should be brought forward to April to reduce the gap.
“What’s amazing to me is how resilient this phenomenon is over such a long period. It is a very Sydney thing,” he said.
