Venues NSW boss David Gallop says he will now push to host bigger sporting events.
has lifted Australia’s chances of hosting the men’s equivalent and should embolden policymakers to be more ambitious about the competitions they chase, NSW’s new stadiums boss David Gallop says.
Sydney’s Allianz Stadium at Moore Park, which has a capacity of 40,000 and is also in Venues NSW’s remit, drew almost 220,000 spectators across six of the World Cup’s early-stage matches and thousands on the evening of Australia’s semi-final clash as it broadcast the match on a live screen. Mr Gallop said each match had furthered Australia’s reputation for hosting international events, and now soccer matches in particular, with this tournament building on Australia’s success in 2015 of hosting the smaller AFC Asian Cup.
Mr Gallop was appointed as NSW Venues chair by state Sports Minister Steve Kamper after illness prompted former premier Morris Iemma to resign after just weeks in the role.Mr Gallop is currently a director of wagering firm Tabcorp and headed the Football Federation of Australia from 2012 to 2019, following a stint as National Rugby League CEO from 2002 to 2012.
