Foreign Minister Penny Wong has touched down in Beijing for a high-stakes meeting with her Chinese counterpart, the first visit to China by an Australian minister in three years.

Wong is scheduled to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for 90 minutes on Wednesday evening, a significantly longer encounter than their previous two meetings. “We obviously have a lot of issues to work through and dialogue is a prerequisite for working them through.”Wong is the first foreign minister to travel to China

Wong was greeted on the tarmac at Beijing on a freezing -4c night on Tuesday by Australia’s Ambassador to China Graham Fletcher and a representative of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.“I acknowledge and thank the government of the People’s Republic of China for the invitation to be here so that we can spend the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our two countries,” she said.
