Siscoe – who has been in custody since his Dec. 16, 2020 arrest – received a sentence of three years, which was a joint recommendation from the Crown and defence. Keith Siscoe was at the South Ohio, Yarmouth County, residence the night Colton Cook arrived on Sept. 25, 2020. Cook was looking for a woman he thought might be at the residence. She wasn’t there but Siscoe invited him in. The pair even had a friendly arm-wrestling match.Siscoe, who was drinking and had passed out, was awoken, presumably by the sound of the gunshot when Robert Charles Rogers, a resident of the home, shot Cook.
When he was initially questioned by the RCMP, Siscoe denied having any involvement. He would eventually come clean about his involvement. The defence argued that because of staff shortages, Siscoe spent much more time in lockdown in his cell than he should have. They pointed to one month where he had spent 33.5 additional hours in lockdown, and another month where it was well over 200 extra hours.
And then there was Siscoe's label as a rat. He said he saw his name written a wall inside the jail with a message that read Keith Siscoe is a rat, beat him up or kill him when you see him. The judge referred to Siscoe’s"horrific" childhood, which was outlined in reports to the court – from an alcoholic father, to abuse inside and outside of the home, to abandonment when Siscoe was young. But he also called this court matter “a very grave offence,” while also listing off Siscoe’s lengthy criminal record. Justice Muise also noted that Siscoe has been banned from the Acadia First Nation community as a result of this crime.
“There’s a darkness over us now and I cannot make it go away,” she said. “And it isn’t just a day here, a day there. It is every single day for over two years.”
