This is the first time since COVID-19 that Harvest House is bringing the event back without restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, said Bennett. Last year, it was one of the few cities in Canada able to have a walk.“By Sunday or Monday, we’ll probably exceed our goal $70,000,” said Bennett. “The closer get to the day of the walk, the more money you are raising.”
The five-km walk begins at Central Christian Church on Kent Street. People gather at 4-5 p.m. for check-in and then walk the circular route for about an hour. Each participant will receive a toque that has “The Coldest Night” on it. Free warm meals and entertainment are provided at the church at the end of the walk to thank donors and walkers. The Coldest Night of the Year is a charitable program operated and supported by Blue Sea Foundation, a registered Canadian Foundation.
“ different from last year when we had to go virtual, so what we missed was the chance of getting together. I’m really excited about us being able to celebrate this together in one space. This year we get to utilize more volunteers because last year it was really just the organizing team and there was a couple of extra volunteers.”
A two-km or five-km route both begin and end at Credit Union Place. Check-in is at 5 p.m. Food, refreshment and entertainment will be provided for the walkers, as well as free tickets to the Western Capitals hockey game at Credit Union Place that evening.“There are nearly $30,000 Canadians every night across the country that are homeless and hungry and in need of shelters.
