DSWD-Davao Warns Against Fake News Promising Cash GiftsDSWD-Davao Warns Against Fake News Promising Cash GiftsThe Department of Social Welfare and Development-Davao Region (DSWD-Davao) has issued a warning to the public about a circulating 'fake news' campaign promising cash gifts through online questionnaire surveys. This follows a similar phishing scam that emerged during the Christmas season in December 2024. The DSWD-Davao regional director, Vanessa Goc-ong, clarified that the agency does not distribute cash gifts to individuals without proper guidelines or in violation of applicable laws. Recently, in January 2025, SunStar Davao reported that numerous netizens on Facebook had encountered the unverified link, which was not affiliated with the DSWD. The link posed four questions, claiming individuals could receive P7,000 cash assistance as part of the agency's New Year's program. Common questions included background information about the DSWD and its role as a government agency. The link also prompted individuals to share sensitive and personal data such as age, birthplace, and location to receive their financial assistance. Goc-ong urged the public to verify information received through social media by checking the DSWD XI - Davao Region's official Facebook page. Meanwhile, the DSWD central office has acknowledged the scam and stated that claims of receiving a P7,000 Christmas gift from the DSWD in exchange for completing a survey are false.
