BREAKING: More Filipinos were out of work in April after a surge in COVID-19 cases forced government to tighten quarantine restrictions, the PSAgovph says.

— More Filipinos were out of work in April after a surge in COVID-19 cases forced government to tighten quarantine restrictions, the Philippine Statistics Authority said Tuesday.

National Statistician Dennis Mapa reported a national 8.7% unemployment rate among residents aged 15 and up, worse than March's 7.1%. This means 4.14 million Filipinos are without jobs, higher than 3.44 million the month prior. However, the recent figure is still milder than the record high of 17.7% or 7.7 million jobless in April 2020, which was recorded a month into the first round of enhanced community quarantine for mainland Luzon.

Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal — collectively known as NCR Plus — were placed under ECQ from March 29 until April 11 due to a surge in COVID-19 cases. The area shifted to the more relaxed modified ECQ from April 12 to 30. While economic managers earlier noted a possible"temporary reversal" of employment gains in April due to stricter quarantine rules, they said the impact could be"less severe" than in 2020 since more sectors were allowed to operate under this year's ECQ and MECQ.
