MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that sulfur dioxide emissions coming from the Kanlaon Volcano have started to drop, an indication of an imminent explosion -- one that may affect about 100,000 residents.

In an interview aired at the Civil Defense in Action social media page of the Office of Civil Defense, Ma. Antonia Bornas, chief of the Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division of Phivolcs , said that from an average of 5,000 tons per day, the emissions went down to between 2,000 and 3000 tons per day.

' Bornas likened Kanlaon to 'diesel,' whose impending eruption has undergone a 'slow process' although, she said, such an occurrence was 'natural.' She said unlike active Mayon or Taal, there were dormant volcanoes that once awakened, could go into a long period of 'eruptive unrest.
