1.3 to 3.5 million COVID19 infections prevented with virus lockdowns: DOF chief

MANILA -- Lockdowns imposed to contain the coronavirus pandemic helped prevent at least 1.3 to 3.5 million infections, Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez said Wednesday, despite downside effect on the economy.

Imposing the enhanced community quarantine has helped the country expand testing capacity and strengthen isolation capabilities, he said. For the first quarter, covering the first part of the 11-week lockdown, the gross domestic product contracted by 0.2 percent for the first time since 1998. Analysts said contraction could be worse in the second quarter.Unemployment ballooned 17.7 percent in April, or equivalent to 7.3 million jobless Filipinos.
