EIGHT hospitals in Cebu Province will soon have general practitioners after the Provincial Government hired 12 new doctors to address the shortage of medical personnel in municipal hospitals.The 12 newly hired doctors were introduced by Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
They are part of the initial batch of GPs who will assist in improving healthcare services in local hospitals.The hospitals include those in Argao, Barili, Daanbantayan, Danao City, Carcar City, Minglanilla, Tuburan, and Sogod.Dr. Nikki Catalan, provincial health consultant, together with Dr. Mary Ann Josephine Arsenal of the Provincial Health Office, explained that the selection of hospitals was based on an assessment conducted by the Department of Health and the preferences of the doctors.“Based sa DOH report on the assessment of all the hospitals, and the first batch of doctors applied pud sa ila hospital of choice if naa pa available slots,” Arsenal said.The Capitol is targeting to hire a total of 78 doctors to fill vacant positions in provincial hospitals and address the lack of healthcare personnel.The newly hired GPs will provide primary care services to patients of all ages, unlike specialists who focus on specific illnesses or diseases.The Provincial Government expects to onboard another batch of doctors and newly hired nurses soon, especially for hospitals in island municipalities where the need is urgent.
