A STUDY has found that two common chewing gum ingredients, Arabic gum and lecithin, can improve the health and cold tolerance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), potentially enabling them to be farmed outside tropical regions. Native to Africa, Nile tilapia have been raised for food since ancient times due to their rapid reproduction.
A STUDY has found that two common chewing gum ingredients, Arabic gum and lecithin, can improve the health and cold tolerance of Nile tilapia , potentially enabling them to be farmed outside tropical regions. Native to Africa, Nile tilapia have been raised for food since ancient times due to their rapid reproduction.
Both ingredients, often found in food products, were fed to the fish in varying amounts for three months. Arabic gum, derived from Acacia trees, and lecithin, an emulsifier from sources such as soybeans and sunflower seeds, are commonly used in chewing gum.The study found that feeding the fish four grams of Arabic gum and 10 grams of lecithin per kilogram of fish food increased their levels of minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants, which helped them manage the stress of colder temperatures.
