The City Government of Davao inaugurates mobile child-friendly spaces to provide therapeutic support and early childhood care to children during and after disasters, and in remote areas.

The City Government of Davao, through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), launched two mobile child-friendly spaces on February 6, 2026. These specially designed vehicles will serve as therapeutic environments for children during and after disasters, providing a safe and supportive haven when traditional child-friendly spaces are unavailable.

The initiative highlights Davao City's commitment to prioritizing the well-being of children, recognizing their unique needs during times of crisis. The mobile units are equipped to offer various activities, including play, drawing, and storytelling, as therapeutic outlets for emotional expression. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the psychological impact of disasters on young individuals.\CSWDO Disaster Focal Person Annabelle Lugo emphasized the importance of addressing children's emotional needs during calamities. In her statement, she highlighted that children are significantly affected by disasters and often require specialized care and support. The mobile spaces are designed to facilitate this, providing a nurturing environment where children can freely express their feelings and begin the healing process. The project was inspired by a 2024 fire incident in Barangay 23-C, where the lack of a child-friendly space during the crisis underscored the need for such mobile resources. The vehicles are equipped with rubberized flooring and adaptable seating, making them ideal for a classroom-like setting. This design ensures that the spaces are comfortable and accommodating for all children. Davao City's administration is praised for its holistic approach, going beyond providing basic necessities to actively investing in the specific interventions required to support children in times of disaster. This approach underscores Davao City's commitment to ensuring comprehensive support for its youngest residents.\The child-friendly space vehicles will be managed by a team of dedicated child development workers and supported by trained community volunteers. These professionals will be responsible for leading activities and providing a nurturing environment for children within the mobile spaces. Additionally, ongoing training programs will be conducted for community volunteers, fostering community resilience and preparedness in the face of disasters. The procurement of the vehicles was handled by the Emergency Welfare Section of the Social Welfare Operation Division under the CSWDO, with funding provided by the CDRRMO. The vehicle designs prioritize accessibility and maneuverability to reach disaster-affected areas effectively. Beyond their emergency response role, the vehicles will also be utilized as Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Mobile units, extending day care services to remote communities. This dual-purpose deployment ensures that the vehicles contribute to children's well-being year-round, strengthening Davao City's overall support system for children. The initiative reflects a commitment to supporting children's emotional, social, and developmental needs across all situations. The CIO provided information on the project
