Opposition Speakership candidate, Bayan Muna Party-List Rep. Carlos Zarate is convinced that President Rodrigo Duterte will still attempt to influence the race for the House’s top post given its impact to his own job.“I think directly or indirectly, in the end, Digong will still pick his own man knowing that the last three years [of his term] will be crucial for his presidency,” the Makabayan solon said.
Over half a dozen congressmen in the 18th Congress have declared their desire to become Speaker. Practically all of them–except Zarate–are either friends or political allies of the Chief Executive. With roughly three weeks to go before Congress resumes sessions, the Speakership race is believed to be down to two bets: Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan stalwart, Marinduque lone district Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, and Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats president, Leyte 1st district Rep. Martin Romualdez.
For his part, Zarate, who bared his bid only last week, vowed to push through with his Speakership plans.
