“I took on the coaching part because no one else was doing it, and as a result, I have done more running,” he says with a chuckle. “But I don’t necessarily identify as a runner.”
When Ryan arrived to Burnaby Mountain, there was no track or cross-country team, two sports he had coached at his previous school. He offered to start a Learn-to-Run program and coordinate a school team for the 2012 Sun Run. “It’s a bonus of how we can tie the community together,” Ryan said of the extended invitation. “We also have some alumni come back and run on our team as well because they’ve enjoyed it in the past.”
In 2013-14, the cross-country team began winning district championships, and in 2014-15, the team won at the zone level. Qualifying for and placing in provincials is now a regular occurrence. In recent years, the school has also seen a graduate secure a full-ride NCAA Division 1 cross-country scholarship.
