The San Miguel Corporation-Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards Night, held at the Manila Hotel's Centennial Hall, honored promising young athletes. Behrouz Mohammad Mojdeh, a standout swimmer, topped the list of Tony Siddayao awardees, recognizing young achievers in Philippine sports.
Promising tanker Behrouz Mohammad Mojdeh leads the pack of Tony Siddayao awardees at the San Miguel Corporation-Philippine Sports writers Association Awards Night set for Monday at the Manila Hotel's Centennial Hall. Mojdeh's dominant performance last year earned him a gold, a silver, and two bronze medals at the Asian Open School Invitational Championship in Bangkok, Thailand.
He also secured two golds, a silver, and two bronzes, along with the Most Outstanding Swimmer award at the Bucaneer Invitational Swimming Tournament in Tokyo, Japan. Furthermore, Mojdeh added gold medals at the Batang Pinoy Nationals, Philippine Aquatics National Age Group, and Philippine Aquatics National Tryout, cementing his place amongst the Tony Siddayao awardees alongside other youthful athletes.His elder sister, Micaela Jasmine, is a previous Tony Siddayao awardee and Milo Junior Athlete of the Year, and currently swims for the national team. A three-time jiu-jitsu world champion and a gold winner in the World Wushu Championships are some of the other prominent recipients making up the Tony Siddayao Awards. Aleia Aielle Aguilar and Alexander Gabriel Delos Reyes spearhead the compact list of athletes to be recognized with the award named after the late former Manila Standard sports editor, Antonio 'Tony' Siddayao, regarded as the Dean of Philippine sports writing.The four other Siddayao awardees are fencer Sophia Shekaina Catantan, swimmer Jamesray Mishael Ajido, and wrestlers Paul Sondrie Capinig and Marian Grace Balisme. All Siddayao awardees will also receive medals and jackets courtesy of Milo. Grandmaster Wesley So, basketball star Kiefer Ravena, Olympians Miguel Tabuena and Dottie Ardina, along with Olympic bronze medalist Eumir Marcial, are some of the past recipients of this honor for young achievers, presented during the traditional awards night supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, Milo, PLDT/Smart and Sen. Bong Go, with backing by the PBA, PVL, 1-Pacman Party List, Rain or Shine, Akari and AcroCity.Aguilar, the daughter of Universal Reality Combat Championship founder and president of the Wrestling Association of the Philippines Alvin Aguilar, became a three-time world champion at just seven years old when she took home the gold in the 22-kilogram (kg) class of the World Festival Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Abu Dhabi. Similarly, Delos Reyes, at 17 years old, won the gold in the boys' taijishan event at the 9th World Junior Wushu Championships in Brunei. Catantan, the 13-year-old sister of Olympian Sam Catantan, replicated this feat in the 5th Southeast Asia Pacific Fencing Championship by securing the gold in the junior women's foil individual event. Ajido and Mojdeh made their mark in the pool, while Balisme and Capinig shone on the wrestling mat. Ajido topped the boys' 12-14 100-meter butterfly at the 11th Asian Age Group Swimming Championships at the New Clark City Aquatics Center in Capas, Tarlac, while Mojdeh, from a family of swimming champions, amassed a collection of medals. Capinig triumphed in the Southeast Asia Oceania Wrestling Championships in Thailand by winning the gold in the 51-kg freestyle, and Balisme claimed the gold in the 61-kg women's freestyle of the same tournament
