Chinese President Xi Jinping has declined an invitation to attend the EU-China summit commemorating 50 years of diplomatic relations, opting instead for Premier Li Qiang to represent China. Tensions between the EU and China have risen since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has declined an invitation to visit Brussels for a summit to mark the 50th anniversary of EU-China diplomatic ties, according to a report by the Financial Times (FT) on Sunday. Beijing has informed EU officials that Premier Li Qiang will attend the summit instead of Xi, the FT said, citing two individuals familiar with the matter who wished to remain anonymous.
Typically, the Chinese premier attends the summit when it takes place in Brussels, while the president hosts it in Beijing. However, the EU had hoped for Xi's presence at this particular summit to commemorate half a century of relations between Beijing and the bloc. Tensions between Brussels and Beijing have escalated since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with the EU accusing China of supporting the Kremlin. Last year, the European Union also implemented tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports. An EU official told the newspaper that informal discussions are ongoing regarding both the date for the EU-China summit this year and the level of representation. The Chinese ministry, when contacted, stated they had no information to provide on the matter. Reuters has yet to receive a response from the European Union regarding this development
