CEBU CITY — A 40-year-old construction worker was hacked to death by his neighbor following an argument over a volleyball game bet in Barangay Budbud, Barili town, southern Cebu, Tuesday evening.
Police identified the victim as Jonathan Selitona Ubas, who was driving home with his common-law partner from the Barili Public Market. As Ubas and his partner approached their residence on a steep, rocky road, 40-year-old neighbor Ruel Luna Curay attacked Ubas with a sickle.The attack caused multiple hack wounds to Ubas's head, neck, and other parts of his body, killing him instantly.A concerned citizen called the Barili police at 9:05 p.m., reporting the incident.
Authorities recovered the farming tool used in the commission of the crime and arrested Curay, who surrendered shortly after the attack.Investigators revealed that the altercation was sparked by a personal grudge between the two men over a volleyball bet.Earlier that day, Ubas and Curay had an argument in the same area, which escalated into violence. Police said Curay had planned the attack after Ubas allegedly assaulted him during their dispute.
