Penny Wong has beaten out a field of parliamentarians including Anthony Albanese to be crowned political leader of the year for her work in 're-setting Australia's foreign policy agenda'.

Ms Wong on Monday was announced as the 2022 McKinnon Political Leader of the Year winner, beating out a field that included Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Ms Wong, who was appointed to her portfolio last May, received the 2022 accolade"for her swift and demonstrable progress in re-setting Australia's foreign policy agenda". Ms Wong has made several overseas trips since assuming her post following Labor's election win last year, including to multiple Pacific nations and to China in December to help smooth over relations with Beijing.

"I thank the Susan McKinnon Foundation and the University of Melbourne for the work they do to advocate for democracy and encourage strong political leadership." Meanwhile, independent federal MP for Indi Helen Haines received the 2022 McKinnon Emerging Political Leader of the Year. Dr Haines was given the nod in recognition"for her commitment to integrity in politics and her dedication to serving her electorate and connecting her constituency to her national policy work".
