Penny Wong has condemned the Taliban’s ‘disregard for human rights’ after they broke one of the promises made when seizing power of Afghanistan last August.

Afghanistan's higher education minister announced the regression in rights - which the Taliban promised against when coming into power - without warning on Tuesday, with the ban taking immediate effect.

As she touched down from Beijing, Ms Wong took to social media to “stand with the women of Afghanistan” and condemn the measures. Ms Wong also released a statement with foreign ministers from 11 other countries - such as the UK, US, France and Japan - as well as the High Representative of the European Union, that urged the Taliban to abandon the new measures.

"These policies make clear the Taliban's disregard for the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the people of Afghanistan.
