The Hill Times
I am a big, old, white-haired, bearded, retired oilfield man living in Red Deer, Alta. I have a truck, but I drive my wife’s Ford Escape to save money. I am vaccinated for various things to help protect my grandchildren. I wear, when needed, steel-toe boots, safety goggles, ear plugs to protect myself, but I wore a mask to protect my wife, my children, my grandchildren, and anyone who may get seriously ill. In other words, I am a nobody.
Oil and gas companies do not face repercussions when they do not pay their municipal taxes. The province is not paying their share of municipal taxes, so our property taxes are going up by double digits. The city of Red Deer’s population is not growing, and we have to face an $18-million deficit this year. We are facing cuts to our services, and a 11.5 per cent increase in our property taxes.
