The state weather bureau on Saturday, May 27, raised tropical cyclone wind signal no. 1 in the eastern portion of Cagayan and the eastern portion of Isabela in preparation for super typhoon Betty’s (international name: Mawar) possible impacts. READ:

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said strong winds posing minimal to minor threat to life and properties may affect the aforementioned areas within 36 hours.

According to the state weather bureau, Betty maintained its strength while moving west-northwestward. It was last detected 1,170 kilometers east of Central Luzon, sustaining maximum winds of 195 kph and gustiness of up to 240 kph. “Ang trough o extension ng bagyo ay kasalukuyang nakakaapekto sa silangang bahagi ng southern Luzon at Visayas, samantalang sa kanlurang bahagi ng bansa ay southwesterly windflow naman ang nagdudulot ng mga pag-ulan ,” said PAGASA Weather Specialist Daniel Villamil in a public weather forecast.

The weather disturbance may unleash heavy rains and trigger strong winds in parts of Luzon. PAGASA said beginning Tuesday, May 30 until Wednesday, May 31, the forecast rainfall in Batanes could exceed 200 mm. Meanwhile, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and La Union may experience heavy to intense rains, leading to an accumulated rainfall of 100 to 200 mm within the forecast period.
