Wildfires fueled by strong winds have ravaged the Los Angeles area, claiming 16 lives and destroying thousands of homes. Evacuation orders remain in place as authorities brace for dangerous weather conditions.

Firefighters battled fierce wildfires that have ravaged the Los Angeles area, claiming 16 lives and destroying thousands of homes. The blazes, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds and dry brush, prompted red flag warnings for dangerous fire conditions through Wednesday. Authorities warned of the potential for further fatalities and missing persons as teams with cadaver dogs searched leveled neighborhoods.

The National Weather Service predicted sustained winds of 50 mph (80 kph) and gusts up to 70 mph (113 kph), making Tuesday the most critical day. Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone said 70 additional water trucks had arrived to assist firefighters. The most destructive fires, the Palisades and Eaton blazes, had consumed over 62 square miles (160 square kilometers) by Sunday morning. The Palisades Fire was 11% contained, while the Eaton Fire reached 27% containment. Evacuation orders remained in place for about 150,000 people, with over 700 residents seeking refuge in nine shelters. Officials assured residents that they would begin discussing repopulation as soon as the red flag warnings expire Wednesday evening. Looting has also become a growing concern, with authorities reporting multiple arrests. Captain Michael Lorenz of the Los Angeles Police Department said seven people had been arrested in the last two days, including two posing as firefighters.
