More than 70 years after Japan's invasion and occupation of the Philippines during World War II, the countries on Monday signed a defense pact that allows them to deploy troops on each other's soil.
Japan 's Defence Minister Minoru Kihara, Japan 's Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, Philippines ' Secretary of Foreign Affairs Enrique Manalo, and Philippines ' Secretary of Defence Gilberto Teodoro join hands during a joint press conference after their 2+2 meeting at a hotel in Manila on July 8, 2024.
That would include live-fire exercises and joint patrols, said Aries Arugay, visiting senior fellow at the Singapore-based ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. The Philippines, which has a mutual defense treaty with the United States, has been seeking to boost security ties with other countries in Asia and Europe.
In April, Washington and Tokyo announced a major overhaul in their defense ties including an upgrade to their command and control structures to make them more nimble in a crisis. Since 2016, Japan has delivered 10 44-metre and two 97-metre multi-role response vessels to the Philippine Coast Guard and has agreed to provide another five 97-metre ships.Earlier this year, a Japanese-made air surveillance system arrived in the Philippines and it has pledged to send a coastal radar surveillance system.
