Senate Minority Leader Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III on Wednesday questioned the $500 million aid given by the United States to the Philippines' military and coast guard."Military hardware na naman na walang pakinabang sa mga magsasaka at mangingisda natin. Why doesn't America make an unprecedented investment in our agricultural sector?" Pimentel said in a text message to reporters.
On the other hand, Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero lauded the military funding from the US, saying this is "a first.""This shows that we are indeed friends and, more importantly, equal partners in maintaining peace, freedom of navigation, and a rules-based approach to differences and disagreements," Escudero said.The Senate president expressed belief that this will not provoke tensions with China over the West Philippine Sea.
