The World Health Organization has expressed serious concern over the US government's decision to suspend funding for HIV treatment programs in developing countries, urging President Trump to reconsider the funding freeze that could have devastating consequences for global HIV prevention and treatment efforts.

The World Health Organization ( WHO ) on Tuesday strongly urged the United States to reconsider its decision to suspend funding for HIV treatment programs in developing countries. This call came after President Donald Trump ordered a freeze on foreign aid. The UN health body expressed 'deep concern' over the funding pause and pleaded with the US government to grant additional exemptions to ensure the continuation of life-saving HIV treatment and care.

Shortly after assuming office, Trump signed an executive order directing the United States to withdraw from the WHO, an organization he has repeatedly criticized for its management of the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, the WHO has been reviewing its priorities in anticipation of the US withdrawal, its largest donor. Regarding HIV, the agency stated on Tuesday that its programs provide access to 'life-saving HIV therapy to more than 30 million people worldwide.' It warned that if the US funding cuts persist, they could result in a surge in new HIV infections and deaths, undoing decades of hard-won progress and potentially pushing the world back to the devastating years of the 1980s and 1990s, when millions died of HIV globally, including many in the United States. — Agence France-Press
