Sara Duterte has been impeached by the House of Representatives. With an overwhelming vote of 215 members, the lower chamber found probable cause to charge the sitting vice president with impeachable offenses. That in itself is not a mere political exercise. It is a constitutional milestone. It signals that the people's representatives, acting as the investigative arm of the impeachment process, have determined that there is enough basis for the Senate to proceed to trial.
They fear that testimony under oath might reveal not just about the vice president, but about others. Allies, fixers, handlers. Possibly even other senators. What they fear most is accountability. Because a trial is a spotlight. It is a national reckoning. It will force the public to ask the hard questions. It may force former allies to reconsider their loyalties when confronted with irrefutable facts. What pro-Duterte senators are doing is a clear attempt at obstruction.
