In the ongoing pro-democracy movements in Hong Kong, Thailand, and the Philippines, one thing they have in common is dissent against laws perceived to clamp down on free speech and the right to criticize the government.

Anyone who defames, insults, or threatens the ruling family can be jailed for up to 15 years. Lèse majesté has been in force since 1957.
reported 98 people were charged for violations of Section 112 from the May 2014 coup until July 2019.
