What have we learned about the Maple Leafs in five pre-season games? The goaltending might just work out, and there’s depth to overcome injuries.
Murray has played 50 minutes in two games, stopping 45 of the 46 shots he has faced. He’s healthy, looks confident and should be the starter when the season opens Oct. 12. Samsonov has played almost 50 minutes, allowing three goals on 46 shots. It is believed the two will share a mostly equal workload, which should allow both to rest and hopefully avoid injury. Murray could be the eventual No. 1, even if that status doesn’t come until later in the season.
The Leafs aren’t expecting him to become Cale Makar — the Norris winner had 28 goals last year to Rielly’s 10 — but they would be happy to see Rielly build on a 68-point season that was four points shy of his career high.Wayne Simmonds’s job is probably safe but there’s plenty of competition to fill out the fourth line, including Adam Gaudette, Nicolas Aubé-Kubel, Zach Aston-Reese, Alex Steeves, Joey Anderson, Nick Abruzzese, Pontus Holmberg, Denis Malgin, and Kyle Clifford.
