THE Synod on Synodality has ended, and aside from gaining a new cardinal, the synodal journey — which should have been underway for some time now — should take determined, even bold steps forward.
First, what it is not and cannot be. Synod ality cannot mean that being a Catholic no longer makes a difference, that all Christian groups are equally right. No, the basic teaching of Vatican II's Dogmatic Constitution on the Church remains. It is in the Catholic Church that one will find subsisting the fullest elements of the Church founded by Jesus Christ. This should not be a statement of privilege but the recognition of a mission, for if this be so, then it must be light upon the hill.
Our professors at the Immaculate Conception School of Theology quoted as freely from leading Protestant theologians such as Langdon Gilkey, Wolfhart Pannenberg, Jurgen Moltmann and others as they did from leading Catholic theologians — the likes of Karl Rainer, Edward Schillebeeckx, Hans Kung, Walter Kasper, Joseph Ratzinger and others — who had a very healthy regard for their Protestant counterparts.
