Poor Philippine Basketball Association. Already deprived of what could’ve been a grand celebration of its 45th anniversary, leading to a bigger Golden Year five years from now, it looks like the country and Asia’s oldest pro league has been forced to a two-conference format.

Worse, Marcial declared the league can go as far as one tournament this year if the deadly virus continues to wreak havoc on global sports, both amateur and professional. Or “knock on wood” no tournament at all. Contested that year were the Open Conference, won by the then Toyota Super Diesels of coach Dante Silverio over their arch rivals Crispa Redmanizers. That was the last time Crispa and Toyota, the two teams that built the now PBA, disputed a PBA title as both disbanded the years following.

The other times the PBA was reduced to a two-conference system was during its 31st to 35th seasons from 2005 to 2010, when the Philippine Cup and Fiesta Cup were contested. But with the coronavirus pandemic raging, a PBA season change looks inevitable, indeed. Marcial said it could be just one conference at worst or two tourneys at best.
