After 3 rounds, Wesley So falls behind world chess champion Magnus Carlsen and Leinier Dominguez Perez in an elite field.
Wesley So opened up with a victory only to be stalled by back-to-back draws and trailed world champion Magnus Carlsen and Leinier Dominguez Perez in the 2020 Champions Showdown: Chess 9LX held online on Saturday, September 12.
The Filipino-born So, now representing the United States, bested Russian Peter Svidler but agreed to a truce with Dominguez Perez, also of the USA, and Armenian Levon Aronian for 2.0 points, half a point behind the pacesetters. Carlsen downed France's Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, drew with living legend Garry Kasparov of Russia, and beat Fabiano Caruana of the USA for 2.5 points, the same total of Dominguez Perez, who stunned fellow USA team member Hikaru Nakamura in the first round and trounced young sensation Alireza Firouzja of Iran in the third round.
So is best remembered for dealing Carlsen his worst beating ever, 12.5-3.5, in their title duel for the First World Championship of Fischer Random in Norway last November. Next up for So in the sixth round is USA's top board player Fabiano Caruana, who is bunched with Kasparov, Aronian, Hikaru Nakamura, also of Team USA, and Svidler at 1.5 points after 3 rounds.– Rappler.com
