Wesley So looks to sustain his strong start in the online rapid and blitz tournament.

Wesley So started strongly and trailed surprise leaders Levon Aronian and Pentala Harikrishna in the $250,000 2020 Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz tournament on Wednesday, September 16.

The Cavite-born So bested fellow Team USA member Jeffery Xiong in the first round then drew with Hikaru Nakamura, also of the United States, and world champion Magnus Carlsen in succession to tally 4 points with Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi. Aronian, the Armenian No. 1, beat Iranian Alireza Firouzja and Russian Alexander Grischuk, respectively, before drawing with Nepomniachtchi to post 5 points, the same total of Indian star Harikrishna, who stunned American Leinier Dominguez, drew with Firouzja, and downed Grischuk.

Having faced the top-seeded Carlsen and No. 2 Nakamura in the event with a time limit of 25 minutes plus 5 seconds increment, the third-ranked So is on course toward surpassing his fifth-place finish in the Champions Showdown. After the nine-round Rapid, play shifts to double-round robin Blitz, where a win is worth 1 point and a draw 0.5.
