I found the trailer for “Weapons” so unsettling, I would have just watched it on a tablet if not for the intense buzz around this movie and its writer/director Zach Cregger.
His debut effort, “Barbarian” , put him on the horror map, and there was an intense bidding war between Jordan Peele and Universal vs. Warner’s New Line Cinema for the “Weapons” script. New Line won the war by agreeing to pay $38M for it.At 2:17 a.m. on a very ordinary weekday, in an ordinary town called Maybrook, all but one child from a third-grade class mysteriously disappears.
It is Abrams’ junkie, however, who manages to steal the scenes he’s in.The premise is clever, the build-up is well-crafted and the movie gets absolutely freaky, scary, and at times gory. Cregger also has this masterful way of letting the tension and suspense mount, of getting you to the edge of your seat and then at certain points in the film he’ll suddenly pull off a bizarrely comedic scene that will get you laughing. After which he’ll take you back to the mayhem at hand.
