Government Services and NDIS Minister Bill Shorten has provided an update on some of the reforms to the scheme his department has been working on.

“I’m pleased to advise … that working with the states, one of the I think nastiest problems that I inherited upon government was that we had about 1,400 people on average a night in hospital beds all over Australia who were medically fit for discharge, but they were waiting for their NDIS package,” Mr Shorten said.

“Now every night someone is in hospital it is an extra $2,500 so what we have managed to do is reduce the number of people stuck in hospital by about 350 already. “That’s saving the hospital systems of Australia the best part of a million dollars a day and it’s great for the person where they can get into better housing.”
