Members of the Breton Education Centre Bears celebrate after the team captured its third New Waterford Coal Bowl Classic title, defeating the Riverview Ravens 73-62 at the BEC gym Saturday. JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON POSTNEW WATERFORD, N.S. — As the final seconds ticked off the clock in Saturday’s championship game of the New Waterford Coal Bowl Classic, there were mixed emotions on each side of the Breton Education Centre gym.

Bears' graduating player Ben Kearney, named the tournament's most valuable player for his outstanding play over the weeklong event, was at a loss for words after the game. Grade 11 student Loghan LeBlanc had 15 points in the contest for the Bears. He left the game for a short time in the fourth quarter after falling hard on his back under the basket but would return to finish the contest. For the Ravens, Anthony Lecky continued his dominant performance on the court, recording a team-high 30 points. His play throughout the week was a key reason Riverview secured a spot in the championship game.

"The one word to describe this win is family," said MacKinnon, a second-team tournament all-star."We've been together right from the start and we knew what we could do if we played as a team and we're happy with the outcome."First Coal Bowl since 2020 Bears head coach Sandy Kearney said the return of the tournament was an"unbelievable experience" for both his players and coaching staff.

"When I met the teams and players Sunday, I had a good feeling about the week and I wasn't wrong," she said."We weren't really sure how things were going to play out, we had some nervous bellies about our capacity and making sure we were sticking to our number, but there weren't any issues." "We wanted to be as cautious as possible so that we could keep everyone safe," she said."We wanted to make sure that the safety of everyone was at the forefront and things went well."
