Western Australia's first big battery will now cost an extra $19 million and not be available until after summer, adding further pressure to the state's electricity grid.

It had been hoped it would strengthen the power grid in coming monthsMore than two years in the making, the Kwinana battery project was announced in October 2020 as a way to strengthen WA's power system, and will be capable of powering 160,000 homes for two hours.

Celebrating the installation of the first battery units of the project in August, Premier Mark McGowan described it as a "pretty simple and neat solution to the problem we face".

"These reserves will add further resilience to the grid during the challenging summer period when the power system is under increased stress," AEMO's executive general manager for WA, Kate Ryan, said.Associate director at renewable energy consultancy Rennie, Greg Ruthven, said even if the battery was not planned for, there was some hope it could have helped strengthen the grid over coming months.
