British director Jo Davies has bold plans for the nation’s biggest performing arts company, which has been mired in gender inequity issues and bullying allegations in recent years.

abc.net.au/news/opera-australia-new-artistic-director-jo-davies/101775468Cardiff-born opera and musical theatre director Jo Davies has been appointed artistic director of Opera Australia — the first woman to hold the role in the company's 66-year history.

"In the end, your artistic policy is defined by one thing: who you choose to work with,” says Davies. While she hasn't worked in Australia before, Davies plans to spend time in the country from early next year, to develop her relationships within Opera Australia and with local artists and organisations."I'm looking forward to collaborating and creating a vision with the people that I've already met at Opera Australia," Davies told ABC Arts.

Davies trained as a musical theatre singer at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy before moving into directing.

British nurses strike for better pay in UKBritish nurses strike for better pay in UKBritish nurses plan on increasing strike action against the government this week over better pay. “It’s an incredibly heart-wrenching decision because on the one hand, there’s the feeling that I’m letting my patients down if I don’t attend work. But then there’s also the feeling that I’m letting my patients down if I don’t make my voice heard and go on strike,' nurse Maxine Wade told Sky News Australia. Around 600 troops will be drafted in to drive ambulances during the strikes, with other personnel taking on support roles, but the union argues the servicemen and women are not trained to mitigate the loss of staff from the strikes.
